What are the Best Foods To Lose Weight

Remember the old food pyramid? The chart that had carbohydrates on the bottom, vegetables and fruits, dairy and meats, then junk on the top? You can check it out here.

How effective is this way of choosing the best foods to lose weight? Not very....

With such a heavy emphasis on carbohydrates it may be quite difficult to lose weight. Which brings me to this point...carbohydrates are NOT the best foods to lose weight.

So, what are the best types of foods you should be eating?

Let's just run through a quick food types starter. This will get you updated on selecting the best foods.

There are three types of foods.

  1. Carbohydrates
  2. Protein
  3. Fats

All foods usually have a percentage of all of these. The foods that have nearly 100% of content from one category are called that category. For example, bread is called a carbohydrate even though it does have some fat and protein.

For weight loss, I always recommend my students to cut back on the carbohydrates. Not to eliminate them, just to cut back. AND pick the right types of carbohydrates to eat. Burn the Fat goes in much more detail about the percentage ratios, what types of foods to chose, etc.

Healthy Carbohydrates

Healthy types of carbohydrates to chose from include whole grain breads, pastas, legumes, healthy beans (not refried haha), vegetables, fruits, oats, rye, etc. Notice something? All of these types have a large amount of fiber. And nutrients!

If you eat too many carbohydrates, even the healthy type, you will have trouble gaining weight. The key is to have a small amount of carbs and a higher amount of protein and healthy fats.

Healthy fats include nuts, peanut butter, olive oil, fatty fish, eggs, etc.

For protein you want to choose lean meats such as chicken breasts, lean steak choices, fish, and whey protein. Protein is great because it keeps you full while providing you with nutrition that prevents muscle loss.

In general, when picking the best foods to eat for fat loss, you want the most natural and unprocessed varieties. Avoid foods with the ingredients "partially hydrogenated vegetable oil" This can also come up as "canola oil" or other varieties.

Look at the fiber content. THe more fiber, the healthier it is and the more it will make you feel full and not hungry anymore.
